Good Samaritan killed in Upper Macungie Twp.

A Ohio man was killed when he was struck by a motor vehicle at 9:44 p.m. Dec. 26, 2012, on I-78, Upper Macungie Township when he went to assist the driver of a vehicle that was disabled from a previous crash.

Richard Helms, 60, of 2065 W. Clifton Ave., Cincinnati, was pronounced dead at 10:31 p.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said.

Grim said Helms death is attributed to multiple blunt force injuries.

He ruled the death an accident.

State Police Troop M Fogelsville say Helms, who had pulled his vehicle onto the right shoulder of I-78 West in the area of mile marker 53.7, walked out onto the left lane of travel to check on the disabled vehicle.

Police say a 2003 GMC Yukon SUV driven by Valerie L. Cavagnaro, 41, of Newington Conn., was westbound in the left lane of I-78. As the SUV approached mile marker 53.7, it began to spin clockwise, hitting Helms with the rear driver's side.

According to police, the SUV sustained moderate driver's side and passenger side damage.

Upper Macungie Fire Department, Cetronia Ambulance Corps and Getz Towing assisted at the scene.
