High School Musicals: Northampton
A small town heats up fast when a slick big-city agent gets the idea to promote his military-drafted rock star, Conrad Birdie (Nick Longenbach), by randomly picking a fan club member, Kim MacAfee (Madison Lahr), to give Birdie one last kiss before he heads off to Army boot camp in "Bye Bye Birdie," 7:30 p m. April 3, 4, and 5, auditorium, Northampton Area High School, 1619 Laubach Avenue, Northampton.
The musical is directed by Nan L. Guss-Mentzell with choreography by Vicki Troxell. Vocal director is Lisa Manno.
The story, a satire on America's fascination with celebrities, takes place in 1958 shortly after Elvis Presley was drafted into the Army.
The cast includes Dylan Ashton (Albert J. Peterson), Karen Fuica (Mae Peterson and Mama) and Gaelan Campbell (Hugo Peabody).
The musical opened on Broadway in April 1960 and was nominated for eight Tony Awards, receiving four: Best Musical, Best Actor (Dick Van Dyke), Best Director (Gower Champion) and Best Choreographer (Champion). The 1963 motion picture starred Van Dyke, Janet Leigh and Ann Margret.
The musical has a book by Michael Stewart with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams.
Songs include "Put On A Happy Face," "One Last Kiss" and "Telephone Hour."
