The annual New Year’s Challenge was held last Saturday at Bucknell University and the Parkland girls team swam its way to a third-place finish, while the boys team finished seventh.

The girls finished behind Wilson West Lawn and Hershey in the competition. Wilson West Lawn was also crowned the top boys team at the meet.

Parkland girls took first and second in the 200-yard individual medley, with Ally Lin taking first, just under three-seconds ahead of Courtney Sicinski. Sophomore Caroline Fahrney finished ninth in the IM and took ninth in the breaststroke event, which was won by Megan Sicinski, beating out two swimmers from Wilson West Lawn who finished second and third.

In addition to her performance in the IM, Lin finished third in the backstroke.

Annie Walls earned with a couple of second-place finishes, coming in less than one second behind the front runner in the butterfly and just .22 out of the top spot in the 500 freestyle. Zoey Sheridan finished 10th in the 500 and took sixth in the 200 freestyle.

Matt Ceh had a big day on the boys side with a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle and a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

Ceh was less than a second behind North Allegheny’s Andrew Zhang in the 100 and was in a group of three swimmers who finished within just over a half-second of each other in the 50-freestyle.

James Connolly placed third in the 500 freestyle and took eighth in the breaststroke, while Gavin Webb finished fourth in the 500. James Zhang had two top-10 finishes on the day with ninth-place swims in both the IM and the backstroke.

In relays, the girls team of Lin, Walls, Megan Sicinski and Grace Kennedy finished fifth in the 200 medley relay, with Parkland also finishing sixth in the 200 freestyle relay.

The 200 free relay team was made up of seniors Kennedy and Sheridan, junior Lin and sophomore Laurel Krause. Parkland also took seventh in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Abigail and Zoe Sheridan joining forces with Walls and Krause.

The boys teamed up seniors Connolly, Ceh and Adam Kucharczuk with sophomore Zhang to finish fifth in the 200-freestyle relay and Connolly, Ceh and Kucharczuk teamed with Webb to finish ninth in the 400-freestyle relay.

The Bucknell event gives swimmers and coaches a gauge of where they stand heading into the second half of the season and gives them exposure to the same facility that will host the PIAA Championships in March.

The Trojans host East Stroudsburg South this afternoon and the Parkland divers will compete in the mid-season Eastern Pennsylvania Conference event Saturday at Nazareth High School.

The Parkland girls are 3-0 in the East Penn Conference this season and 4-0 overall, while the boys are 3-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall.
