Cheerleaders earn trip to state championship
Parkland High School’s cheerleaders will compete in the PIAA State Competitive Spirit Cheerleading Championships this weekend after winning the silver medal in the medium division at the District 11 Competitive Spirit Cheerleading Championships on Jan. 6 at Easton Area Middle School.
“It was one of the best performances they did all year,” said Trojan cheerleading coach Sami Jo Crivellaro. “They were really confident with their routine. They were on all week. We just kept pushing and knew the routine was pretty solid.”
The Trojan’s routine opened with standing tumbling, followed by single-base stunts, sequences, running tumbling, the cheer, jumps, the dance, and ended with a pyramid.
“We got really good scores on our cheer,” said Crivellaro. “The judges said we were crowd effective, and they liked our transition from jumps to our dance. We scored high on presentation, which is volume and pace, and they liked our opening.”
Parkland’s score was 227.30.
Easton placed first in the same division with a score of 230.5. Pleasant Valley was third with 204.5 points, and Pocono Mountain East won the wild card spot to states with a score of 188.3.
“Right now we’re making some changes, adding some difficulty for states,” said Crivellaro.
Parkland’s cheerleaders are Jessica Duke, Madison Smith, Mackenzie Snyder, Kelsey Frary, Hannah Zarzecki, Hanna Johnson, Kyliegh Haas, Eileen Jeon, Katelyn Rizzetto, Jessica Homa, Madison Troxell, Madison Kinsley, Madison Gagge, Madison Evans, Elizabeth Njie, Jillian Peischl, Kaitlyn Shaffer, and Grace Bachrach.
Crivellaro is assisted by Cara Seward.
“This was the first time Parkland medaled in cheerleading in a long time,” said Crivellaro. “They couldn’t call the awards fast enough. It was really nail-biting. I think we’re in a really nice spot for states. It feels really good.”
