Jane Hammel, 88, of Exton, formerly of Newtown Square, died Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Sunrise of Exton Senior Living.

She was the wife of the late Warlyn F.V. Hammel.

Born Nov. 4, 1929, in Easton, she was the daughter of the late Alvin O. and Perma T. (Kuhns) Peters.

She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and worked as a registered nurse at various health care institutions in the Philadelphia area.

A true life long learner, she continued to pursue both nursing and the liberal arts at Villanova University.

For decades, she was active in the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania alumni association.

She was an advocate for women’s rights and women’s health. Through her early support of Emily’s List, she was proud of the role she played in the elections of the first women to the U.S. Congress.

She lived her life on a continuous quest for pleasure and amusement. Her motto was “Life is short, eat dessert first!”

Her survivors include children Scott C. Hammel of Quarryville, Caroline J. Hammel-Shaver of Barto, Patricia H. Sturm of Luthersville, Md., Valerie H. Wagner of West Chester; and nine grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother Earl K. Schneck.
