Bridge to open by December

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 by SUSAN RUMBLE Special to The Press in Local News

Valley Road Bridge near Guthsville Rod and Gun Club should reopen in late November or December, according to South Whitehall Public Works Manager Jeffry Clapper.

At the Sept. 19 commissioners’ meeting, Clapper reported seven bids were received for the job, and the lowest overall responsible bid of $94,560 came from Professional Construction Contractors Inc., Bethlehem. Clapper noted Keystone Consulting Engineers, the firm involved with the bid process, has worked with the company and concurs with the staff’s recommendation to award the project to them.

In another public works matter, Clapper said the department is checking equipment to be ready for leaf collection around Columbus Day.

George Kinney, director of community development, stated the Dollar General store proposed for 2032-2070 Walbert Avenue received zoning recommendation. He said the size of the building was reduced from the original application.

Dollar General is seeking to construct a 7,489-square-foot retail store and a 26-space parking lot on the site which is zoned neighborhood commercial.

On another issue, Kinney explained staff are working on a traffic calming policy intended to address neighborhood concerns such as excessive speed and cut-through traffic in residential areas.

Township Manager Renee Bickel said the permit process for improvements to Wehr’s Dam will take all of 2019.

Permits must be received from regulatory agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection.
