Four PHS runners make it to states

Thursday, October 31, 2019 by STEPHEN ALTHOUSE Special to the Press in Sports

The depth of the Parkland Trojans girls and boys squad was a constant during the 2019 campaign. It was also on display during District 11 Class 3A competition Oct. 23 at DeSales University.

The boys squad earned a third-place finish with 86 points, behind winner Nazareth and Southern Lehigh. Leading the way for the Trojans and finishing fifth overall was Ethan Warren in a time of 17:05. Warren has been the “leader of the team” throughout the campaign, according to head coach Stephen Ott.

Nate Reimer was the Trojans’ next finisher and 12th overall, crossing the finish line at 17:20. Reimer and Warren’s finishes were both good enough to earn a spot in Saturday’s PIAA Championships in Hershey.

Ben Esquieres earned 17th place and teammate Logan Iacobelli took the 24th position.

The girls squad turned in a solid performance, earning fourth place behind winner Emmaus and Liberty and Southern Lehigh. The top Trojan finisher was Ava Bendetti, who clocked in 20:26, good for 14th place overall. Behind her by three seconds was teammate Brooke Labenberg, who claimed 15th position.

Both Bendetti and Labenberg will advance to next weekend’s state championships.

Elena Wegner ran a good race, finishing in 21:05, good enough for 25th overall.

Bendetti and Labenberg have “taken turns as leaders of the team” throughout the year, according to Ott. Wegner has “steadily improved during the season” and has turned in good runs in both EPC and District competition.
