Parkland School Board candidates to debate tonight

Lehigh County Republican Committee and the League of Women Voters of Lehigh County are hosting a Candidates Night Debate for Parkland School Board directors 6-8 p.m. April 13 in the Forum Room at Parkland High School, 2700 N. Cedar Crest Blvd., South Whitehall Township.

Cross-filed candidates are: Lisa A. Adams, Robert Bold, Martin Brans, Carol Facchiano, David Kennedy and Roy (Jef) Reyburn.

Democratic ballot only: Rochell Figueroa. Republican ballot only: David Caruth.

All candidates have been invited to the debate.

Police seek man in connection with Albany Twp. kidnapping

Troopers from State Police Troop L Hamburg are investigating a kidnapping, which occurred Feb.16 at a home in the 1300 block of Hawk Mountain Road, Albany Township, Berks County.

Police are looking for Marshall Glenn McGinty, 43, who should be considered armed and dangerous, Trooper David Beohm, public information office, from State Police Troop L Reading said.

According to Beohm, a man who had previously aided McGinty with food and supplies, was house sitting at the Hawk Mountain home, when he came home around 4:45 p.m. Monday and found McGinty in the house.

Fire damages S. Whitehall home

A bedroom was damaged Wednesday in a midmorning fire at a home in South Whitehall Township.

The fire in a home at the corner of Russell and N. 26th streets blackened and charred the outside brick of the house and a second floor window appeared to be removed.

A fire official at the scene said the fire appeared to be contained to the bedroom. The homeowner was home at the time and tried to put out the fire but was unsuccessful and called firefighters. No injuries were reported.

An investigation by the township fire marshal was underway by late morning.

Family, friends, firefighters fondly remember Sam Ashmar

Family, firefighters, colleagues and friends are mourning the loss of Upper Macungie Supervisors' Vice Chairman and Fire Marshal Samir "Sam" Ashmar 51, who died suddenly Nov. 20.

Ashmar, from Breinigsville, was pronounced dead 8:52 p.m. last Thursday in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said.

Ashmar also served on the Upper Macungie Township Planning Commission and Authority since 2006.

UPDATE: Section of high school evacuated

A section of Parkland High School was evacuated early morning Oct. 7 when the odor of sulfur permeated a room in the science wing.

Volunteer firefighters from Woodlawn and Greenawalds fire departments, along with Lehigh County Emergency Management Agency, were dispatched around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday to locate the origin of the smell.

South Whitehall Township police and personnel from Cetronia Ambulance Corps and UGI Gas Services also responded to the scene.

Parkland School District Superintendent Richard Sniscak spoke with The Press about the incident.

Wehr's Dam report to be released 5 p.m. Oct. 9

KCI Technologies, the engineering firm funded by a grant obtained through the Wildlands Conservancy to study Wehr's Dam, South Whitehall, will present its report 5 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Wehr's Dam recreation hall, near the dam.

Following the report, there will be time provided for public comment.

The Covered Bridge Park Master Plan, approved by South Whitehall commissioners in February, proposes removal of the dam.
