Trojans avenge loss

Thursday, October 5, 2017 by CJ HEMERLY in Sports

When the Emmaus and Parkland girls volleyball teams last took the court against each other two weeks ago, the Green Hornets accomplished a feat that not only was long coming for them, but also every other team in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11.

Emmaus swept the Trojans in straight sets, ending a 120-match win streak for Parkland, dating back to 2009.

But beating a team twice in the same season, let alone in a two-week span is tough, and Parkland had even more motivation this time around.

With the parity that exists in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Division in 2017, every win is a big one.

After five mostly convincing wins to open the season, the Parkland football team came from behind for the first time this year, and held on for a 31-21 win last Friday night at Whitehall High School.

This week the Trojans host an undefeated Bethlehem Catholic in a battle between the last two unbeaten teams in the EPC.

The Parkland football team is off to its best start in years with wins in its first games to start the regular season.

A difficult five-game stretch was placed in the middle of the schedule. So far the Trojans (5-0 overall, 4-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South) are three-for-three, with victories over Liberty, Easton and Freedom the last three weeks.

Next up is another challenge, a trip to Whitehall (4-1 overall, 3-1 EPC South) on Friday night.

The Parkland football team is always looking to get better.

While wins over Allen, Nazareth and Liberty put the Trojans at 3-0, their fourth win over the season might have made the biggest statement.

They accomplished their first goal in winning week one of the regular season against Allen, but they heard that ‘it was just Allen.’

Senior quarterback Michael Ruisch went 16-of-28 for 248 yards and two touchdowns last Friday night and the Trojans dispatched of previously-unbeaten Easton 42-7 at Parkland School District Stadium.

After an impressive 42-7 victory over then-unbeaten Easton (3-1) last Friday night, the Parkland football team does not have much time to celebrate.

This Friday night the Trojans (4-0 overall, 3-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Division) welcome Freedom (3-1, 1-1) to Parkland School District Stadium in another test.

This is a rematch from the District 11 Class 6A championship game last season, which was won by Parkland.

The Patriots are coming off a 26-13 win over Northampton and looking for a marquee victory after losing to Easton two weeks ago.

Good teams want to be tested during the regular season, and there are different ways a team can be challenged.

The Parkland girls volleyball team, ranked second in the state in 4A, has seen its fair share of challenges.

With the front portion of their schedule back-loaded with teams from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference North division, the Trojans have come out of those games with wins in convincing fashion.

Girls volleyball wins three straight

Bringing in a new group of players is something that the Parkland girls volleyball team and head coach Mike Krause have been accustomed to doing for the last decade.

The Trojans said goodbye to another decorated senior class last year. But Krause has players waiting in the wings to step up and lead Parkland back to the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 title games, where they appeared last season.

Seniors Kirah Dreisbach and Mia Jago, and junior Grace Steurer are returning starters, and each had a big hand in last week’s season-opener.

This Friday night at Parkland School District Stadium, two undefeated teams will clash in a pivotal Eastern Pennsylvania Conference football game that could go a long way in deciding the conference champion and district playoff seeding.

Parkland (3-0 overall, 2-0 EPC South) and Easton (3-0, 2-0) have traded punches in regular season and district games the last couple of years, but the Trojans have won the last five meetings.

PHS blows away Hurricanes, 24-7

Thursday, September 14, 2017 by CJ HEMERLY in Sports

The last two years, the Liberty football team had success against Parkland. The Hurricanes had beaten the five-time defending District 11 champs in each of the last two regular seasons.

But last Friday night was a different story.

Turnovers and penalties terrorized the Hurricanes as they fell to Parkland 24-7 in their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference home opener at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.
