Lehigh County Board of Commissioners voted Oct. 11 to appeal U.S. District Judge Edward Smith’s ruling in favor of the Freedom From Religion Foundation in its suit against Lehigh County’s continued use of a Latin cross in the county seal.

The 6-3 vote came after an executive session during which commissioners discussed the case.

In the public session, three commissioners — David Jones, Geoff Brace and Dan Hartzell — voted against appealing the decision.

Paula Roberts’ appointment as Lehigh County’s Children and Youth Services director was confirmed Sept. 27 with a unanimous vote by Lehigh County commissioners Sept. 27.

Two weeks ago, commissioners approved the appointment during the first reading of the proposal.

Roberts, serving as acting director for two weeks, can now put on her full director’s hat.

With the department for 26 years, Roberts replaces former director Pamela Buehrle.

“We have a lot of talent and I would like to build on the talent we have,” said Roberts, after her appoint was finalized.
