Greater Hazleton Health Alliance (GHHA) and Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) today announced they have signed an agreement for a full asset merger pending regulatory approval. The GHHA Board of Directors approved the merger on April 3 and the LVHN Board of Trustees executive committee on April 16 with the full Board of Trustees ratification expected May 1. The decision by the boards of both organizations builds upon a historical relationship.
As we approach the May 21 primary election, the Parkland Press and the Northwestern Press, in the interest of fairness, will halt the publication of columns by local government officials and letters to the editor submitted by those running for office.
The last week for publication of columns by local government officials will be the April 25 edition.
We will, of course, continue to cover the local races, in news stories generated by our own reporters.
Basketball fundraiser for Jaindl Elementary.
Edge of the Woods Native Plant Nursery, 2415 Route 100, Orefield, will be having staff guided tours of demonstration gardens at the nursery 10 a.m. Tuesdays in April through July, and in September, and 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursdays April through July.
Each week will bring a new delight of blooms as well as insects and butterflies. Scout the gardens for inspiration.
Wear a hat and sunscreen, and bring drinking water.
No registration necessary.

John R. Ritter, 62, of Neffs died on April 16, 2013, in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, where he received the very best of care for complications related to a bone marrow transplant for cancer.
He was born into a family that settled in the Lehigh Valley in 1731.
Clarence and Arline Ritter, his parents, eventually moved to Allentown's West End, where he attended Muhlenberg Elementary School and Raub Junior High, and graduated from Allen High School in 1968.
Naomi E. Davis, 83, of New Tripoli, died April 20, 2013, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown.
She was predeceased by her husband Marvin H. Davis in January 2012, after sharing 57 years of marriage.
Born in Lehighton, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Evelyn ( Heilman) Wetzel.
She was a member of Jacob's Church, Jacksonville, Lynn Township, where she was a former Sunday School teacher, and where she wrote and produced many of the Sunday School Christmas programs.
She had a beautiful voice and was a former choir member.
AARP Chapter 3115 will meet noon May 2 at the American Club, 300 Cherry St., Coplay.
Refreshments will be available during the social hour.
Glenn Miller will entertain with his one-man band.
Tickets will be available for the annual picnic.

Terry Allen Graul, 62, of South Whitehall Township, died April 19, 2013, in Pocono Medical Center, Monroe County.
He and his wife Dorrie V. (Voorhis) Graul celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on July 23, 2012.
Born in Punxsutawney, he was the son of the late Earl Henery and Evelyn Mae (Bennett) Graul.
He was a 1968 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.
For the last 13 years, he was a truck driver for CPC Logistics, Allentown.
A member of Trout Unlimited, he was an avid fly fisherman, who loved the outdoors, camping and fishing for trout.
