Lehigh County nowoffering 'Reverse 911'

Lehigh County Emergency Services is providing "Reverse 911", a community notification system intended to alert residents and businesses about emergencies that may affect their safety.

Residents and businesses that already have landline telephone connections through such providers as Verizon, Frontier and Ironton, are automatically included in this free notification system.

Those with other services and devices are encouraged to sign-up for notification.

Mae K. Ringer, 90, from Schnecksville died on March 16, 2013, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

She was the wife of the late Stanley R. Ringer.

Born July 12, 1922 in Drumhole, Egypt, Whitehall Township, she was the daughter of the late Earl W. and Rosa K. (Peifly) Hunsicker.

She owned and operated, with her late husband and son, Alan, a farm in North Whitehall Township for 41 years before retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, where she was active in Helping Hands and the Harvest Home Committee.

State Police Troop M Bethlehem say Michael Reinhart, 24, of Allentown, allegedly repeatedly struck a truck belonging to James Herman with a rake 4:11 a.m. March 4 at 3845 Mauch Chunk Road, North Whitehall Township.

Reinhart was charged with criminal mischief, police say.

Now accepting applications

The Frederick J. Jaindl Scholarship will be given to a student enrolled in agriculture in a two- or four-year institution of higher learning.

This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded on Aug. 28 at the Ag Awards program in the Agri-Plex building during the 2013 Great Allentown Fair.

To apply for the scholarship, you must have exhibited a competitive entry at the Allentown Fair for at least one year.

Complete a two-section application and send it to the Allentown Fair office before Aug. 12.

VFW accepting new members

The Military Nursing Corps of Pennsylvania, VFW Post 12099, is welcoming veterans with service in overseas conflicts.

Current members of Post 12099 have proudly served in every conflict from World War II to active status in the global war on terror.

Post 12099, headquartered in the Gen. Charles C. Curtis National Guard Armory, 1501 Allen St., Allentown, and meets 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.

Veteran's discharge paper (DD214), or if active duty, a letter from their commanding officer, is required to determine eligibility for VFW membership.

Book fair planned for April 20

Children's Dyslexia Center of Allentown is having a book fair 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 20, at Barnes and Noble at The Promenade Shops, Center Valley.

Events include book signings by Author Eli Kowalski, appearance by Kushka, the real-life dog from the book "Kushka, the Dog Named Cat," musical performance by Ryan Leaver 1- 2 p.m.; special story times; crafts; face painting; and a store scavenger hunt.
