As the sounds of progress hummed in the background and construction tradesmen work to build the new PPL Center hockey arena and convention center, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski officially announced Sept. 9 he is running for governor of Pennsylvania in 2014.
Pawlowski, who first announced his decision Sunday on the Melissa Harris-Perry show on MSNBC, said this was not a decision he comes to lightly.

A 51-years-old Lower Nazareth Township man died Sept. 2 after he was found unresponsive in the lake at Grouse Hall Fish and Game, 3335 Levans Road, North Whitehall Township.
Douglas Bachman, of 4967 Hanoverville Road, fell into the lake prior to 3:19 p.m., Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said.
Bachman was pronounced dead at 4:12 p.m. the same day at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, Grim said.
A 31-year-old Reading man died Aug. 27 when his motorcycle struck a brick wall in the parking lot of 7360 Windsor Drive, Upper Macungie Township.
Matthew Risell, of 2104 Orchard View Road, was pronounced dead 1:47 p.m. at the scene by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Richard Pender, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said.
The cause of Risell's death was attributed to multiple blunt injuries, said Grim, who ruled the manner of of death an accident.

Family, friends and residents and staff at The Terrace at Phoebe Allentown recently celebrated the 100th birthday of Mildred Lawfer Wilson.
Mildred, the daughter of the late Alfred and Katie Lawfer, was born Aug. 11, 1913.
The oldest member of Greenawalds United Church of Christ, she lived most of her life in that South Whitehall community.
A 1931 graduate of South Whitehall High School, she was the class valedictorian and president.
Edge of the Woods Native Plant Nursery recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Louise L. Schaefer and Susan Tantsits, co-owners of Edge of the Woods, 2415 N. Route 100, Orefield, said the nursery began in Tantsits' backyard in 2003 then moved to its present location in 2007.
Schaefer and Tantsits were Master Gardeners with the Lehigh County Master Gardeners program and both worked at the Wildlands Conservancy, Emmaus.
A 42-year-old Orefield man died July 27 while trimming trees in Bethlehem.
Robert Rogers III died due to electrocution, said Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek.
Rogers was using a bucket truck when he contacted one of the 12-kilovolt lines near the eastern end of Sand Island at the Minsi Trail Bridge.
His death was ruled an accident.
