Jim Thorpe coin debuts at area banks

The new Jim Thorpe $1 coin has made its debut at area banks.

The 2018 reverse design from the U.S. Mint depicts Jim Thorpe with the foreground elements highlighting his football and Olympic achievements.

Inscriptions are “Jim Thorpe,” “Wa-Tho-Huk” (Thorpe’s Sac and Fox tribe name), “United States of America” and “$1.”

The Native American $1 coin program celebrates contributions made by Native American tribes and individual Native Americans to the history and development of the United States.

Turnpike releases statement about tunnel incident

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has issued a statement about incident that resulted in the death of a truck driver Wednesday night.

A New Jersey man was killed after a piece of electrical conduit crashed through his windshield and struck him in the head inside the Lehigh Tunnel in Lehigh County.

State Police at Pocono said the incident occurred at 6:03 p.m. along Route 476 near mile marker 71.4 inside the Lehigh Tunnel in Washington Township.
