Seniors look to take final step

Thursday, May 8, 2014 by TODD KRESS in HS Sports

For as much success as this senior group of Lady Trojan lacrosse players has endured over their careers, they've yet to win the a district title.

But every year, they've made strides amongst Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 competition.

The Lady Trojans have grown from a team that was bounced from the semifinals in leagues and districts in 2011, to a team that won leagues and was a win away from a district championship in 2013.

This year, they have their eyes set on that elusive district crownespecially this senior class.

Last week's game against rival Emmaus figured to be Parkland's lone remaining threat keeping them from an undefeated Lehigh Valley Conference girls lacrosse season.

It turns out that threat wasn't much of one when all was said and done.

The Lady Trojans (14-3 overall; 10-0 in LVC) took a quick 4-0 lead and handled the Lady Hornets (10-8 overall; 7-3 in LVC), 13-6, last Thursday at Troxell Middle School.

During this year's college sports seasons, Parkland saw a number of alumni put together standout campaigns.

Boston College senior running back Andre Williams put together a Heisman-nomination season on the football field, while Kutztown University senior Ziad Haddad was a Division II national wrestling champion at the heavyweight bout. Those were just two former Trojans that highlighted the collegiate ranks.

One of the biggest games of their season is in a few days against Easton.

However, that didn't deter the Parkland girls' lacrosse team from focusing on the task at hand prior to a matchup against Liberty on Tuesday.

The Lady Trojans (9-3 overall; 6-0 in LVC) had little trouble disposing the Lady Hurricanes (2-9 overall; 2-5 in LVC). A 12-1 lead at halftime quickly inflated to 17-1 before the Lady Trojans secured the 18-3 victory at Troxell Middle School.

Zuber is 'living the dream' at UB

Her passion for the sport of basketball grew at an early age.

Ashley Zuber was two or three years old when she had her first experience with basketball.

However, that experience didn't start out so well.

After waiting in line with her father for a high school boys state playoff game at the Geigle Complex in Reading, Zuber got news that the event had been sold out. She broke down in tears.

Castillo goal beats Hornets

She may be just a junior, but Sophie Castillo has certainly had her share of shining moments for the Parkland girls' lacrosse team.

During last week's Lehigh Valley Conference showdown against Emmaus, Castillo added another game-winner to her total.

Following a goal from the Lady Hornets with under three minutes remaining that tied it 11-11, Parkland won the faceoff and ensured the last shot would come from its side.

Trojans erase two-goal deficit to beat Emmaus

The way the Parkland boys' lacrosse team responded late during last week's contest against Emmaus certainly said a lot about the program.

Down 5-3 for over half of the final period, an apparent leg injury to junior Jon Warg left the Trojans without one of their top defenders for the final 6:14 of regulation.

But that didn't stop Parkland from clawing back into the game. In fact, the stoppage seemed to have sparked the inconsistent Trojans in a big way.

Trojans open with four wins

It's hard to imagine a better start to the season for the Parkland baseball team.

Following their season-opening 11-2 nonconference win over North Penn, the Trojans (4-0 overall; 2-0 in LVC) used a total dominating effort to shut out Nazareth, 9-0, in their first LVC game of the season.

Gabe Moser struck out nine Nazareth batters over five innings of two-hit baseball, while seven Trojans scored runs in the victory.

"We played real well," Moser said after the Nazareth victory. "All around it was well-played. The bats were alive and everything was just good."

The trio of Parkland seniors Jimmy Hahn, Nick Rindock and Justin Zajko carried the boys' basketball team to a District XI Class AAAA championship this past winter.

During the 39th Annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic on "Super Saturday" at Northampton Area Community College, those three helped the Lehigh Valley West squad jump out to an early lead and capture a 97-96 win over the Colonial League boys.

Volleyball team has same expectations

Last season, the Parkland boys' volleyball team captured its first league title in three years after defeating Bethlehem Catholic in the Lehigh Valley Conference championship.

Getting back to that level may be a bit tougher this season.

The Trojans graduated seven seniors from last year's team that earned its first LVC crown since 2010. But while they'll return just four players with varsity experience last year, head coach Scott Trumbauer expectations aren't changing.
