Outside funds help Parkland School District

Parkland School District Director of community and public relations Nicole McGalla reports that during the 2011-12 school term, $166,006 was raised in alternative revenue to ease the pain of declining income.

McGalla said sponsors helped out with several district events.

The staff breakfast, costing $3,200, was sponsored by Giant Markets and Chick-fil-A.

Outback Steakhouse sponsored the $1,700 retirement luncheon.

Board approves Ocean Spray plans

Upper Macungie supervisors have given final plan approval for the proposed Ocean Spray facility.

There was some confusion at the Aug. 2 meeting as to whether the matter was on the agenda.

Ocean Spray recently reviewed revised plans with the planning commission.

"It had to do with downsizing the building," Director of Community Development Ken Molony explained.

After a discussion, supervisors decided to address the matter and gave quick approval.

Police advise using caution with door-to-door salesmen

Berks-Lehigh Regional Police received complaints from two separate residents, one from Boxwood Court, the other from Elderberry Drive, on July 30 and 31 about a male going through the neighborhood purporting to be an intern with the Parkland School District.

The male, who was carrying paperwork that appeared to be a spreadsheet, attempted to ask questions ranging from satisfaction with the school district to athletics.

Blood drive at Zion's Church

Parkland Community Library will be hosting a night at the movies between 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 in the South Whitehall Building, 4444 Walbert Ave.

The library's Book Quest group for adults will meet 7-8:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 to discuss "Girl with No Shadow" by Joanne Harris.

New members are always welcome.

Upper Macungie Township will be showing the movie "Puss in Boots" Aug. 10 in Breinigsville Park. Rain date is Aug. 11.

Krysta Cares Flight Club has first golf fundraiser for children

The "KC Flight Club", a service branch of the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund, recently had its first golf fundraiser of 2012 "Courses That Care" "Miles That Matter" at Pleasant Hills Golf Course.

The Flight Club raises money to purchase gas cards for families who must transport children for continuing medical care.

Thirty-two golfers participated and more than $500 was raised to purchase gas cards.

Golfers participate in a two-player scramble format.
