FAFSA sessions February-April

Lehigh Carbon Community College will be hosting its FAFSA Completion Nights at the following campus locations at 6 p.m. February through April.

·Feb. 27 or March 6: LCCC Main Campus Technology Center, Room 202 and 204, 4525 Education Park Drive, Schnecksville;

·March 12: LCCC Morgan Center, Room 109, 234 High St., Tamaqua; and

·March 26, April 16, or 23: LCCC Donley Center, Room 204, 718 Hamilton St., Allentown.

Each session will run about an hour.

Child protection bill advances

Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Justin Simmons, R-131st, to help inform parents about registered sex offenders in communities was unanimously approved by the House Education Committee.

"My bill would provide parents with more information in the fight against child predators," Simmons said. "That information will help them determine the safest walking route for their children to school or to the school bus stop."

Group to meet on Feb. 28

Lehigh Valley Chapter 1371 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet noon Feb. 28 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 1933 Hanover Ave., Allentown.

Harry F. Dorman, local financial planner, will discuss the new tax laws and make suggestions for additional tax savings for seniors.

A brief business session will conclude the meeting.

Those wanting to attend only the program and meeting should arrive at 12:45 pm.

The class is an introductory noncredit course that prepares students to transition to high-demand healthcare-related careers.

Lehigh County Aging and Adult Services is accepting nominations for Unsung Heroes.

To celebrate older American's month, the Lehigh County Office of Aging and Adult Services will recognize Lehigh County residents, 60 years of age or older, who have displayed exceptional generosity with their time and talent to enhance the lives of others and their community.

The Unsung Hero finalists will be honored at a special awards ceremony 1 p.m. May 15 at the Lehigh County Government Center, 17th S. 7th St., Allentown.

Accepting applications

The Allentown Branch of the American Association of University Women is accepting applications for Interrupted Studies grants.

Grants are given to women both residing in, and attending school in, the greater Lehigh Valley area, who have had their college studies interrupted for at least six months and who have returned/are returning to school during the academic year beginning summer 2013 and ending spring 2014.

Deadline for receipt of applications is Feb. 16.

Allentown Public Library, 1210 Hamilton St., Allentown, will be having an Off-the-Page Poetry and Open Mic Night 7-8:30 p.m. Feb. 27.

This will be a platform for poets, storytellers and musicians to share their works and the inspiration behind them in an intimate setting.
