Cetronia Elementary recently celebrated the grand opening of an outdoor classroom.
The $41,000 project was funded entirely by the Parents Association of Cetronia and will allow teachers and students to learn in a designated outdoor instructional space.
As with field trips, learning and student achievement can take place outside the traditional four classroom walls.
Exposure to natural settings can have an intrinsic effect on student’s emotional and cognitive functioning.

A year from now, Veterans Memorial Elementary School, under construction in Upper Macungie Township will open its doors to about 500 children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Situated on an 18-acre site on the west side of Twin Ponds Road between Long Lane and Schantz Road, the new facility was planned in response to high residential growth in the southwestern portion of the district.
Parkland and Freedom high schools are coming together for a yearlong fundraiser to benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley.
Throughout the year at various sporting events, both schools will sell gold T-shirts — featuring school logos — and encourage students to create a Gold Out at different games and matches.
The first event was a Parkland/Freedom football game Sept. 6 at Orefield Middle School.
At this game, local pediatric cancer kids served as honorary team captains and joined the high school team captains on the field for a coin toss.
Students in grades six through 12 recently took part in a sweet event at Parkland Community Library, South Whitehall.
During the chemistry candy lab presented on Sept. 14, Amanda Evans, in charge of teen services and programming at the library, explained to the group how they could create edible gummy laces from juices such as cranberry-strawberry or grape.
By only adding a few special ingredients, they would have edible gummy candies in just a few minutes.
Lehigh Carbon Community College, Schnecksville, and its foundation will host a fall fitness fest on Oct. 19.
This year’s events are focused on raising money for student scholarships and LCCC’s Cougar Cabinet food pantry, created to address food insecurity among LCCC students.
The partnership with United Way funds the Allentown Food Pantry, while the partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank benefits both the Allentown and Schnecksville food pantries.
Monetary or food donations are appreciated anytime and on the day of the event.

The American Red Cross wants to make sure students are safe as they head back to school.
“While safety is a top priority for all students, there are special steps for parents of younger kids and those headed to school for the first time,” said Guy Triano, Regional CEO of the Red Cross Eastern Pennsylvania Region. “Make sure the child knows their phone number, address, how to get in touch with their parents at work, how to get in touch with another trusted adult and how to dial 911.
“Teach children not to talk to strangers or accept rides from someone they don’t know.”
