Girls clip Hawks in LVC playoffs

Sunday, February 17, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

The landscape of the Lehigh Valley Conference championship game all of a sudden looks significantly different than what many expected.

Moments after Nazareth defeated Central Catholic in the first semifinal matchup, fourth-seeded Parkland had upset on its mind against No. 1 seed Bethlehem Catholic, who hadn't lost a conference game all year.

And thanks in large part to an 11-2 run to close out the game, the Trojans outlasted the Hawks Tuesday night at Easton Middle School for a...

Sunday, February 17, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

Momentum is huge in basketball, especially heading into a postseason.

The Parkland boys basketball team is happy to be riding some momentum heading into the conference and district tournaments the next two weeks. After a disappointing 60-39 loss to Allen two days prior, the Trojans bounced back in a big way, holding off a pesky Whitehall team 56-43 last Saturday night at Whitehall.

The seedings for the LVC tournament was already set before tipoff, but you can't tell head coach...

Trojans leave states with heads high

Sunday, February 17, 2013 by PETER CAR Special to the Press in HS Sports

Tuesday night's 41-24 victory over Freedom wasn't a consolation prize for Parkland, but it may have been a little pick me up after coming home from the PIAA tournament on the losing end.

The Trojans advanced to the fourth round of consolations over the weekend in Hershey, but saw their season end to a familiar foe - Easton.

The Rovers clipped Parkland for the third time this season by a 30-25 score to end the Trojans run at the state tournament.

Easton, subsequently,...

Parkland, Easton follow familiar script in district final

Thursday, February 7, 2013 by PETER CAR in HS Sports

The reality of the situation was difficult for Parkland to handle. It was written across the face of their wrestlers, heard from the crackle of their voices and showed in their reluctance at accepting another silver medal.

When the dust settled at the District 11 team wrestling championships last Saturday evening at Freedom High School, Parkland had yet again failed to conquer Easton on the final mat.

Easton overcame a 13-point deficit en route to claiming their fourth straight...

Heist adds name to 100-win club

Thursday, February 7, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

Shaun Heist has had a memorable year so far, and there is so more to come.

The senior was a defensive force on the football team which won the Lehigh Valley Conference, District 11 and reached the PIAA quarterfinals. More recently, the dual-sport star won his 100th match on the wrestling match.

"It's a great accomplishment to get to 100 wins for sure," Heist said. "It's kind of cool thinking that I can look at my name on the banner with all of the other Parkland wrestlers that...

Strong third quarter leads boys over K-Kids

Thursday, February 7, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

Despite leading 17-9 heading into halftime of Tuesday's game against Northampton, the news wasn't all good for the Parkland boys basketball team.

The teams were tied 2-2 after the first quarter of play and the Trojans had hit just seven of their first 25 shots.

But if there was any reason for concern, that was quickly dismissed in the third quarter.

The Trojans outscored the Konkrete Kids 21-2 during that third quarter stretch, building their lead to as much as 27 at one...

Girls march back for big win over Nazareth

Thursday, February 7, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

For three straight games, the Parkland girls basketball team has been matched up with three of the top Lehigh Valley Conference teams.

Bethlehem Catholic, Central Catholic and Nazareth all lead their divisions when the Trojans faced them. Last Friday night at Parkland was no different.

But after losses to both Becahi and Central, Parkland finally broke into the win column against another league power.

Hannah Gombos and Sierra Derti each tallied 10 points and lead a...

Boys fall to national power

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The name of the school may have changed, but the boys basketball program hasn't. The Patrick School, formerly known as Saint Patrick's out of Elizabeth, NJ, still has the Division I type athletes, and national recognition.

Some of those type of players were on display last Sunday in the second game of the 18th annual Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase event held at Parkland High School.

Parkland (13-4) held firm and battled until the end, but just could not match the size and...

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

After putting together a winning streak of 13 games over the course of nearly a month, the Parkland girls basketball team is now in the midst of a two-game losing skid, their longest of the season.

While Tuesday night's 39-27 defeat to Central Catholic at Rockne Hall was just their second in a row, the Trojans fell to 7-3 in the LVC and remain behind the Vikettes, Becahi and Nazareth in the conference standings.

The Vikettes (16-3, 10-1 LVC) pulled away from the Trojans (14-3,...
