Frozen Trojans come back to tie Emmaus

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

Ryan Dumbach's second goal of the night was scored in dramatic fashion.

With traffic in front of the net, Dumbach scored the game-tying goal with 36 seconds left on the clock to salvage a 6-6 tie for the Parkland ice hockey team against Emmaus Monday night at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.

"It was a playoff type atmosphere," said head coach Gerry Chandik. "It was crazy out there. I think that kind of got to them a little bit because they wanted to do a little more than they...

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by LOU RUSNOCK in HS Sports

Parkland senior volleyball star Kelly Robertson was selected as the 2012-13 Gatorade Pennsylvania Volleyball Player of the Year last week after leading the team to a second place finish in the state.

Robertson, the 2011-12 Parkland Press Female Athlete of the Year, is the first played from Parkland to win the honor.

In a season which many thought the Trojan volleyball team would take a step back from 2011, when the team won the school's first state title in girls volleyball,...

Krause inducted into PVCA Hall of Fame

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by LOU RUSNOCK in HS Sports

Girls volleyball wasn't a major contributor to the Parkland sports trophy case when Mike Krause arrived at the school in 2004.

In fact, the team wasn't a contributor at all.

But in Krause's nine years as the Trojan head coach, they've had to make some room for the sport not only in the trophy room, but also in the rafters.

His successful turnaround has not gone unnoticed as Krause was recently inducted into the Pennsylvania Volleybal Coaches Association Hall of Fame at...

Patriots boys take first matchup with Trojans

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Parkland boys basketball team was not ready for the atmosphere they faced last Saturday night in the opening game of the season. Freedom played with a lot of energy in front of their crowd, and were on point offensively, taking the finale of the Yasso/Rothrock Christmas City Classic 54-47 at Freedom High School.

The Patriots jumped on the Trojans early in the first quarter, with Nyreef Jackson and Stellar Tournament MVP Derike Chiclana leading the way. Jackson hit three from...

The Parkland boys and girls swimming and diving team had an easy go of their first meet of the season, defeating Souderton. The boys won by a score of 114-72, and the girls were 111-75 winners.

The girls are led by senior Megan Polaha. Polaha, along with Katherine Kapelsohn, Erika Freeman and Erin Jordan won the opening event, the 200 medley relay. Freeman and Polaha also took the 400 free relay, partnered with Siena Salvaggio and Shannon Bonner.

Polaha was also a winner in two...

Girls suffocate Freedom for victory

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

Offensively, the Parkland girls basketball team looked solid in their season-opener against Freedom over the weekend in the Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic.

Three players scored eight or more points, but it was the Trojans' suffocating defense and full-court pressure that was most impressive of their 48-26 victory over the Patriots at Freedom High School last Saturday evening.

"Definitely we got the tempo that we wanted to," said senior forward Sierra Derti. "We took it...

SWIMMING PREVIEW Faces change, goals remain same in the pool

Thursday, December 6, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Parkland girls swimming and diving team will have some new faces guiding the program this year.

Last year, with the leadership of seniors Erica Reifinger and Emily Stang, the Lady Trojans experienced great success. They finished with an overall record of 11-1-1 as a team, and placed first at the District 11 meet.

Reifinger (100 back and 200 free) and Stang (100 free) were district winners and the most experienced on the team. But head coach Rob Robitaille feels that he has...

Explorers take out Trojans

Thursday, December 6, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

For once, Parkland's explosive offense could not find a rhythm. La Salle's defense kept breaking up play after play before they could even have a chance of happening.

The Explorers got to quarterback Tim Baranek 12 times in a 28-7 win in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals last Saturday afternoon at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. The win advances La Salle to the state semifinals for the fourth straight season, also defeating a District 11 team for the fourth straight year (Easton...

WRESTLING PREVIEW Grapplers set sights on D11 crown in 2013

Thursday, December 6, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Parkland wrestling team was a match away from a District 11 championship last season.

The Trojans as a team lost to Easton 38-20 in the district final, but this year, they are returning some quality wrestlers that performed at a very high level in the postseason and are hungry to achieve district glory.

"Our guys are pretty self-motivated," said head coach Ryan Nunamaker. "We have a lot of returning guys back with a good amount of experience, and had some success last year...
