Trojans finish season with three straight wins

Thursday, July 10, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in Sports

South Parkland could be one of those teams that others need to keep an eye on in the Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs.

While the Trojans finished in the middle of the pack (9-9) and are the league's fifth seed coming into the postseason, they've shown that there are some reasons to fear them in the double-elimination tournament.

The regular season ended with a strong 5-1 win over Fullerton (10-8), with Zach Miller picking up a single and a double to drive in two runs in the win, which gave South Parkland a three-game winning streak heading into the playoffs.

Heading into Thursday's 44th Lehigh Valley All Star Football Classic, the Gold team (Northampton, Palisades and Phillipsburg) had won three straight games, and four of the last five after a 7-7 tie in 2010.

When the game kicked off on Thursday, the Red team (Lehigh, Carbon and Monroe counties) sent a message early on that a reverse in that trend was in store.

Summer hoops team still perfect

If Tuesday night's summer league game was a tuneup for the upcoming summer tournaments, the Parkland boys basketball team will be rearing to go.

The Trojans dismantled an undermanned Easton team 68-34 at Cedar Beach last Tuesday night, their last game before opening up play at the annual Stellar showcase event which begins next Thursday night.

The Trojans had three different players score in double figures and had two more score eight in the rout of the Red Rovers.

After going undefeated through the regular season and the Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs last year, North Parkland repeated as the regular season champion, finishing 16-2 this season.

The Buffaloes enter the postseason with an 11-game winning streak. Their only two losses came early in the season, dropping a 3-1 decision to Southern Lehigh and a 2-1 game to Coplay.

Those two losses spotlighted what was a chink in the armor for North Parkland early in the season: its offense.

Summer league basketball is about opportunities. Teams are trying to determine which types of systems and players will work out best come the season in the winter.

The Parkland boys basketball team will have a very different look to it coming off a District 11 championship last year. The Trojans will have to replace four starters and seven seniors which were the core of the team's run to two straight district titles, and dominating performances in the Lehigh Valley Conference.

Lehigh Valley tops Schuylkill-Berks in all-star game

Thursday, June 26, 2014 by TODD KRESS in Sports

Lehigh Valley faced a 3-0 deficit after the top of the third inning during last night's legion all-star game.

But that lead for Schuylkill-Berks was short lived. And once the Lehigh Valley bats got going, the offense didn't let up.

Lehigh Valley responded with six runs of their own in the bottom of the third, and added a run in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the 8-2 victory on Monday Night at FirstEnergy Stadium. It was the Lehigh Valley's third consecutive victory in the all-star game after dropping the inaugural game four years ago.

SP Legion snaps skid

Thursday, June 19, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in Sports

South Parkland took out some frustrations for a five-game losing skid against Salisbury Tuesday night, downing the Falcons 15-1. South Parkland (3-5) now holds a one-game lead for the final playoff spot in the Lehigh Valley Legion League as they approach the mid-point of the schedule.

The season started well for South Parkland, which won its first two games but then went on a losing skid that had dropped them into last place in the LVLL. While a 3-5 record isn't what the team was hoping for, they've already eclipsed their win record from last season when they went 2-16.
